Institute of Sylviculture and Forest Protection
Sylviculture and forest protection, and the related theoretical and practical subjects are taught in the Institute of Sylviculture and Forest Protection. Both sciences play an important role in forest management and were integral parts of the initial curriculum in the early period of educating forestry professionals. Studying sylviculture, students learn about the evolution of forest ecosystems, the most important types of the Europe's and world's forests, their development, afforestation, natural and artifical regeneration, tending juvenile forests, and managing mature forests up to harvesting. Separate subjects cover sampling and seedling production, nursery establishment and maintenance and the roles of planting by-road trees and shelter belts. During study tours organised by the institute, students learn about forestry practices developed in various parts of the country.
The subject of Forest Protection teaches the preservation of forest health, theories and practices of forest protection, natural enemy complexes. The institute gives a thorough education about invertebrates, fungi and other pathogenic organisms, their life cycles, and methods of protection against them. Microscopes, the library, and collections of fungi, insects and vertebrate animals assist education.
